You Have Been in Love for So Many Years

Suddenly you encounter an invented distance
A fabricated interval of unknown origin you
Recognize this reticent length of time or space
Somewhere you haven’t seen since high school
Sometime you haven’t been for twenty years
And you’re not surprised by its diffidence by its
Offering no plot summaries no scuttlebutt chitchat
No hi how ya doins even somehow you know this
Is not a joiner this belongs nowhere at no hour
Being here and waiting briefly for something like
A thousand human years could be a purpose
And you notice the horizon gnawing clouds
Until they bleed until day disappears and distance
Clenches like a fist it closes like your mother’s roses
