a slamming door
would startle the woodpecker
she is stalking beneath the dogwood.

If Lee Upton were a bird,
only night would silence her
tap tap tapping on the tree.

If Lee Upton were a noise,
she would sound like
what silences a woodpecker
just before the cat pounces
like the slamming of a door.
