Two boys on a small, gray donkey
herd a flock of sheep and goats
past a squad of American soldiers.
The boys are wearing leather sandals,
and each has a stick in his right hand.
The soldiers have been walking a long way.
The boys hit the donkey and the sheep,
but the goats won't be bullied.
A dust twister dances in the distance.
The last thoughts of the sun
will be sifting into the long
black shadows of evening
by the time the Americans stop walking.
